Q & A

This essay was sent to us by one very talented skater girl! Thanks Grace and keep up the great school work!

Zooming down your first hill at what feels like the speed of light, speeding through the bowl, and defying gravity is what makes skateboarding so much fun.  Middle school students should try
skateboarding because its good exercise, its safe, and incredibly fun.

Skateboarding is good exercise. It can get you off the couch and away
form your electronic devices such as computers, cell phones, and
iPods. And getting up off the couch and getting active is important to
staying fit. Skateboarding is a great way to get fun-to-do exercise.
As expert skateboarder John Pauls writes, “Skateboarding can
definitely help you to get into better shape and change what you think
of when the word exercise is mentioned.”

Not only is skateboarding good exercise, it is also safer than many
sports that middle school students often participate in. Many parents
discourage their children from learning to skateboard because they
think that skateboarding is dangerous. But, skateboarding results in
fewer injuries than many popular sports. For example, according to the
U.S. Consumer Safety Commission, a person is 5 times more likely to
get injured playing basketball than skateboarding. And the commission
also found that skateparks with smooth surfaces and skaters who wear
protective gear greatly lower injury rate. So, to be safe, all skaters
should skate at skateparks and always wear a helmet and pads.

No matter how safe a sport is, it must also be fun for middle school
students to do it often. I think skateboarding is a blast. I find that
it provides a special kind of thrill that no other popular sport can
provide. I like meeting up with my skater friends and racing each
other down the ramps. I also enjoy going to the monthly Austin
Skateboarding Club rally where we get together and learn new tricks
from skateboarding instructors. Skateboarding is so much fun, I just
can’t help getting on my board and going for a ride anytime I can.

I think all middle school students should give skateboarding a try. It
will get you outside and away from your electronics. It will keep you
fit, it’s safe, and it is a whole lot of fun. Now that you know the
many beneficial reasons to learn to skateboard, hope on skateboard and
catch some air!
