Answer: Mongo is a style of pushing where the back foot is kept on the board and the pushing is done with the front foot. Here’s what it looks like…

This style is not recommended for a couple of reasons. One being because it takes too much time and movement to get speed. I’ll explain…

So this is what a “normal” push should look like.You can see in image 3, that the push foot(the back foot) is in a great position to return to the board after making the push. Allowing the rider to get back into proper riding position quick, fast and in a hurry.

Now look at the riders foot at the end of a “mongo” push.Because the front foot is used to push instead of the back, you can see that the rider now has to bring the foot all the way back to the front of the board.  A lot of times when skating, you need a quick push to get extra speed needed for an up coming obstacle. Pushing Mongo will make this scenario much more difficult.

The front foot is everything when doing tricks. Certain tricks require your front foot to be in certain positions on the board. When pushing the “regular” way, the riders front foot can already be in position, just waiting for the back foot to pop the tail. While pushing mongo means you have to bring your foot all they way back to the front of the board, and then move it into the proper position depending on what trick you are going to do. This takes too much time!

Another reason not to push mongo is because you will be the person pushing mongo. Pushing mongo is a huge faux pas in skateboarding.  Sorry to those out there currently pushing this way but please learn to push the “normal” way. It will open new doors to your skateboarding. Unfortunately, it is very difficult for most to make the switch once use to it. Dang muscle memory! So parents please make sure your children are pushing correctly from the start.
