WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF SPONSORSHIP IN SKATEBOARDING?

Odds are if your child is into skateboarding they more than likely hope to one day be sponsored! To learn more about what it means to be sponsored read our blog post titled: WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE “SPONSORED”?

There are four levels of sponsorship.

  1. SHOP SPONSORSHIP– is when a local skate shop wants the skater to represent their store. It may look something like this…Maybe a free board every once in awhile along with other shop t-shirts and stickers, discounts on everything, pay your entry fees to contests, have you skate in demos, let you behind the counter at the shop, that kind of stuff.
  2. FLOW SPONSORSHIP– from either a skate company or a distributor. The sponsored skater receives a small amount of product for free on a semi-regular basis. They are not officially part of the team but still represent the company.
  3. After that, an up and coming skater may make it to AMATEUR (Am) status. This is where they will receive some promotion as a skater, as well as some free product to use. They’ll start to get incentives as well. An incentive is when the sponsor gives you something(usually money) if you get the brand any outside recognition. Such as getting a photo in a magazine or posted online of you skating with the sponsors logo visible.
  4. A really good Am who proves his or herself can then become a PRO, receiving a paycheck and royalties for anything that is sold with their name on it. Ahhh…the promise land…

If your child wants to get sponsored please encourage it! To help them get there foot in the door, make sure they visit the local skate shop as often as possible. Getting to know the local skaters is a good start to getting your name out there. Also, though not necessary, encourage your children to participate in skateboarding competitions. It’s a great way for them to earn some recognition.

As always…THANKS FOR READING and HAPPY SKATEBOARDING!
